Since the first mention of Roblox voice chat in February 2021, there have been numerous rumors about when a new site-wide update would be coming to the platform. Now, in October 2021, players are just months away from voice chat and new age verification settings, avatar customizations, and more. Though there’s no set date as to when Roblox will roll these features out to all players, it’s been hinted that at this point, it’s only a matter of time.
Avatar Update
With the many announcements from 2021’s Roblox Developer Conference, one that stuck out the most was the promise of in-depth facial recognition and avatar creation services. This update will bring in Dynamic Heads, which, as defined by Roblox, will allow avatars to play facial animations and trigger facial expressions to help showcase certain moods and feelings.
It’s also rumored that in the future, players will be able to use VR to track the movement and expressions of their own face and head in real life and have them mirrored onto their Roblox avatar.
This addition will allow players more opportunities for self-expression and personality to be shown by their Robloxian. It will even affect certain dynamic facial accessories such as glasses and beards. These accessories will be made to react alongside any emotion or displayed animation. Along with changing facial features and expressions, these new avatars will also become more bodily dynamic—meaning that their movements will be executed smoother and more realistically. As mentioned above, there’s no set date as to when this particular update will be released to the public. However, it is currently available in beta testing for Roblox developers. Voice chatting and age verification are likely to appear before the end of this year. In contrast, the avatar customization update may not emerge until 2022 or 2023 due to its massive size and necessary changes.
