One of the most frustrating parts about creating a farm in Minecraft is setting up its boundary wall. Large solid blocks reduce our visibility, transparent blocks don’t fit the aesthetics, and slabs or smaller blocks don’t serve the functionality. Luckily, if you choose to learn how to make a fence in Minecraft, you won’t need anything else to confine your mobs. More importantly, almost all the Minecraft biomes carry the ingredients to help you make a fence. So, without further ado, let’s see how to make a fence in Minecraft within a few minutes of spawning.

What is a Fence in Minecraft

The fence is one of the many barrier blocks in Minecraft. It serves a great purpose in helping players bring their best Minecraft house ideas to life. But unlike regular blocks, fences behave in a unique manner. If you place it without any blocks around it, the fence acts like a stick that’s stabbed into the ground. But with other fences or blocks around it, the fence changes its shape to get attached to them.

When it comes to mob interaction, neither the player nor any mob can jump above the fence. But you can see through it, thanks to the gaps in its design. With such features, fences make up for a great way to trap mobs while monitoring them.

Depending upon the type of block you use, you can make 10 different types of fences in Minecraft:

Other than the Nether brick fences, all the other fences are made out of some kind of wood in the game. Moreover, because the crimson, warped, and Nether brick fences are from the Nether dimension, they don’t catch fire. It is also worth pointing out that Nether brick fences don’t attach themselves to other fences. Meanwhile, you can freely connect wooden fences (of any type) with each other.

You can find naturally generating fences in the following locations:

You can easily break these fences to pick them up and place them at any place. But due to their ease of crafting, most players don’t go that far.

To make fences in Minecraft, you need the following items:

You can get planks by placing logs or stems in the crafting area. Then, you just have to put two planks vertically next to each other to turn them into sticks. Not to forget, if you want to make Nether brick fences, you need to obtain the following items:

  • 4 Nether bricks2 Nether brick(s)

The “Nether brick” is an item you obtain by smelting Netherrack. Meanwhile, “Nether bricks” is a block that you get by combining several “Nether brick” items together. Please don’t confuse the two.

To make a wooden fence in Minecraft, you first have to place two sticks in the middle cells of the top and middle row of the crafting area. Then, place planks on either side of those wooden sticks leaving the final row blank. The sticks don’t have to be of the same type of wood as the planks. But all planks must be of the same type of wood for this recipe to work.

The crafting recipe for Nether brick fences is similar to the one for wooden fences. You have to place a nether brick in each middle cell of the top and middle row of the crafting area. Then place nether bricks on either side of the “nether brick”, leaving the final-row blank.
